The idea of volunteering abroad seems so exciting. Travelling, seeing the world, all whilst helping a good cause. On paper, it sounds perfect. But volunteering isn’t for everyone, and even if it is something you want to do, you need to make sure you do it in the right way. Here are some points to take into consideration:
- Do you want to travel or are you happy to be based in one place? You will have the opportunity to travel during your free time, but won’t be able to go as far due to your commitments. Think about this and weigh up pros and cons.
- Have you researched the organisation? Sadly, many people will offer volunteering opportunities to exploit tourists, local people and wildlife. Check the details over thoroughly before making any commitments.
- Can you book directly with the organisation? If you can, do this, as they will then benefit from all the money you pay.
